Outings and Walks

The Trans Canada Trail
Click the above link for the History

Access and parking on Harris road 3km North of Lougheed Hwy at the bridge.

This section of the trail is part of the extensive dyking system that controls flooding and irrigates the many farms in this area. There are many sites to see along your walk and benches for resting or just taking in the spectacular views.

The Harris Road Dyke

Located at the north end of Harris Road. There is
parking available on the roadside near the dyke access. The walk from this point is to either the north or the south. The walk north is about 3 km to the end, walking south connects to the 40+km of dyking in Pitt Meadows.

At this section of the dyke you are walking along the Pitt River. This river to the north connects to Pitt Lake.

Pitt Lake is one of the few tidal lakes in the world. The lake flows into the Pitt River which in turn feeds into the Mighty Fraser River and then flows to the Pacific.

The Hale Road Dyke

This is a very nice area of the Pitt Meadow's Dyke system. The walk is level, and has benches scattered every 500 to 1000 feet. The walk is along the North Allouette River and the mountain and wildlife views are spectacular.

During spawning season you can see a good deal of activity from many vantage points. This area of Pitt Meadows is well known as a habitat for many species of birds including Herons, Ducks, Hawks and Eagles.

Along this particular part of the dyke there are a few beach accesses that allow you to get into the water from a sandy beach area.

                The Fraser River Dyke Area

One of the access areas is at the Pitt Meadow's Airport. There is parking near the airport and it is a good starting and finishing point for your walk. The Airport has a coffee shop for refreshments before or after.

The "Mighty Fraser River" is home to many bird species. There are a few areas along this walk that allow you to the shore of the river. Some of the sunsets from this area are breathtaking.

                                        Pitt Lake
                                Grant Narrows Park

Take Harris Road (north) and turn right (east) onto McNeil Road. Follow McNeil Road to Neaves Road and turn left (north). Continue down Neaves Road to Grant Narrows.

Pitt Lake at Grant Narrows has lots of parking, a picnic area, portable washrooms and a seasonal concession stand. The Pitt Addington Marsh is on the east side of the dyke that divides the marsh from the lake. The Marsh area is home to a variety of bird species and it is possible to walk completely around the marsh. There are 2 observation towers open to the public to allow a better view of the lake and the marsh.

Grant Narrows National Park has a boat ramp and overnight parking of vehicles (for a fee). Across Grant Narrows to Widgeon Creek you will find a popular spot for canoeists. The creek is shallow, calm and very relaxing with a good deal of wildlife to view. If you follow the creek to the left at the fork it will take you to a canoeist's campsite that is available on a first come first serve basis. Using the campsite as a base, there is a great hike up to the falls and Widgeon Lake. There are about 10 campsites and pit toilets.
