Pitt
Meadows History |
Pitt Meadows was officially incorporated
in 1914. The river that separates Pitt Meadows from Port
Coquitlam was named "Pitt" (Named after William
Pitt ) by a Hudsons Bay Company employee who was surveying
the area in the 1820's. The area the river flowed through
became known as Pitt Meadows. The area was very wet and
marshy.
The wet and marshy condition of Pitt Meadows was a very
real problem for the population and many dyking attempts
were made over many decades to correct conditions. Pitt
Meadows is in a flood plain and historically was flooded
often.
Today, there are more
then 40 kilometres of dyking around Pitt Meadows that
have been effectively keeping Pitt Meadows dry for many
decades. The dyking that protects the area serves multiple
purposes, some of the dyking has access for horseback
riding and much of the other 40 kilometres allows excellent
recreational oppurtunities that include running, cycling
or just walking and taking in the fresh air and some of
the best mountain views in the lower mainland. |
